Mercury And The Wood Cutter
Outline: A wood cutter cutting wood on a river bank.. his axe falls into the water of the river… he repents… god mercury with a golden axe appears… the wood cutter says it is not mine…. The god re appear with an axe of silver.. wood cutter again refuses … third time god mercury dips into the water and brings an iron axe…. The wood cutter exclaims with joy… god mercury is pleased… hands over the wood cutter all the three axes… Moral.
Once a poor wood cutter was cutting down a tree on the bank of a deep river. By chance his axe slipped and fell into the river and sank to the bottom. It was a heavy loss to the poor man. He sat on the bank and began to weep bitterly.
Mercury the god of water hearing his cries appeared to him and said why are you weeping? The poor fellow related the sad incident.
Then the god dived into the water and brought out a gold axe. He enquired if it was his. The wood cutter replied " No it is not mine".
Mercury again plunged into the river and this time brought up a beautiful silver axe. This too the honest wood cutter refused to take as it was not his.
So the god dived into the water a third time and this time came out with the axe which the wood cutter had lost. " That is mine" cried the wood cutter joyfully.
Mercury was so pleased at the poor man's honest that he have his own iron axe to him and presents him with the other two as a reward for his truth and honesty.
Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
